The Hybrid House combines compressed-earth block, strawbale, and post- and-beam construction methods. Its 4 bedrooms and bathroom consolidate the private areas in an L-shape surrounding the shared kitchen and living areas. Strawbale exterior walls insulate the sleeping areas, and perforated block walls allow light into the shared space while minimizing the cost of windows. Building orientation and roof slopes take advantage of South Africa's unique geographic location and climate, while roof drainage terminates at a water collection cistern, for added sustainability.

This 3 bedroom home with a sleeping loft is designed to flexibly accomodate the various needs of a growing family. Its hybrid strawbale/brick construction will incorporate several passive cooling strategies, as well as combine contemporary design with inexpensive, local construction & materials. |
